Find Their World
Look for something they’re already absorbed in.
Don’t announce a new activity, bring supplies, or try to improve what they’re doing.
Just notice where their attention already is and go there.
OR
“Can you show me what you’re doing?”
For ten minutes, step into whatever world they’re already in.
Look for something they’re already absorbed in.
Don’t announce a new activity, bring supplies, or try to improve what they’re doing.
Just notice where their attention already is and go there.
Sit beside them and let them explain.
If the red car is apparently the fastest car in the universe, it is.
If the teddy is the doctor and you’re the patient, congratulations you’re the patient.
If they want you to play computer games with them, you give it your best try.
Try not to turn the moment into teaching, correcting or showing them a “better” way.
Give them your attention for a few minutes.
Ask questions because you’re genuinely interested, not because you’re trying to steer the game somewhere.
Laugh with them. Copy them. Let the rules change without warning. 😂
You don’t need to stay for an hour. Five or ten minutes of truly entering their world can be enough.
